Are you interested in writing for children and teenagers? If you want to be the next JK Rowling or James Valentine, our Creative Writing For Children course will suit first-time writers, or those who have a children’s story they’ve never been brave enough to show anyone but their own kids!

If you want to write creatively for children or teenagers then our Writing Books For Children course is the place to start. This is for all budding writers who want to be the next JK Rowling or Libby Gleeson! During this 5 week course, you will also be supplied with handouts and information about children’s literature, and we'll analyse samples from published children's and young adult fiction.

WEEK 1: GETTING STARTED - We'll consider some of the characteristics of good writing for children and adolescents and learn if there are particular 'rules' about plot, language and story content. We will also discuss the creative writing process.

WEEK 2: VOICE AND POINT OF VIEW - What exactly is the story’s 'voice' and how do you find the right voice in which to tell your story? The session will include some writing activities designed to help you explore point of view and to find your story's voice.

WEEK 3: CHARACTERISATION AND DIALOGUE - We look at the tools you can use to create believable characters that children will be interested in - including dialogue, physical description, creating a back story and the characters journey through the course of the story.

WEEK 4: STORY STRUCTURE AND EDITING YOUR OWN WORK – We'll discuss if there are different rules about plot for different age ranges and also the role of the editor. If we want to get an impartial, external opinion, how do we go about finding someone who is legitimate and respected?

WEEK 5: WHERE TO GET PUBLISHED - We focus on workshopping students' work and how to get published in the children's market, including how to submit manuscripts, what support networks are out there and other helpful resources.
