An exciting and informative vineyard and winery experience, teamed with overnight accommodation at a selected B&B and dinner at a top class Orange restaurant, Selkirk’s. Guided by experienced wine people, learn about winemaking from the ground up.

Arriving in Orange you will check into your accommodation before taking the short (15 minute) drive to Canobolas-Smith Wines. Here your vineyard and winery experience will really begin. You will be taken on a brief tour of the vineyard and given an introduction to cool climate viticulture – look at vine varieties, pruning styles and the pursuit of excellence on the 20 acre vineyard. Moving to the Canobolas-Smith Winery, winemaker Murray Smith (or assistant winemaker Justin Byrne) will walk you through the winemaking process. Learn about crushing, pressing, fermenting, barrel aging and other winemaking techniques. Taste for yourself the difference between a barrel fermented wine and a tank fermented wine. Learn about the impact of oak – is French oak different to American oak? Taste for yourself. The winemaking elements of this part of the experience can be tailored to the level of technical interest. Round off the experience with a tasting of selected wines from the Cellar Door. You won’t leave a winemaker but you will have a good understanding of the winemaking process – from vine to wine at a friendly, informative, quality focussed winery.

Driving back to town you can take in some sights or simply return to your quality accommodation before dinner at Selkirk’s Restaurant – a special dining experience matched with Canobolas-Smith wines.

Venue:

The city of Orange is 250 kms (3.5 hours drive) west of Sydney.

Session Length

This is a short break experience including one night accommodation and dinner for two. The boutique winery experience will take two to three hours (depending on numbers).

Guidelines:

This is an experience for those who have a love of good food and wine and would like to extend their knowledge with an enjoyable short break in an emerging cool climate wine district. Participants should be over 18 years.

Weather:

Orange is known as Australia’s Colour City and it experiences all four seasons. Snow falls in winter on Mount Canobolas. The overall experience will not be affected by the weather.

Other Info:

This experience operates year round Tuesday to Friday subject to availability of accommodation bookings. Vintage in Orange occurs from mid-March to mid-May. Fridays will need to be booked approximately a month in advance.
