Zoo Admission and Hippo Encounter - Adult
You don’t have to travel to Africa to hang with a hippo! Get up close and personal with a hippopotamus during a hippo close encounter tour at our zoo in Adelaide. Also included is day admission to the zoo so you can check out many other amazing animals from around the world!
Meerkats, otters and Malayan sun bears – you’ll see a global menagerie of animals during your visit to our zoo. With your zoo admission you can spend the day viewing animals (both from Australia and other continents), relaxing in picnic areas or pick up a bite to eat from our cafe.
The highlight of the day is the special Hippo Encounter behind-the-scenes tour! During this tour you’ll get to meet Susie and Brutus, our huge pair of Nile hippos. Help the keeper give the hippos their daily mouth check and then feed them a hippo snack! With a maximum of six people in the group this is a very special experience!
You’ll also get to meet out zebra family and see our beautiful bongo (a large forest-dwelling antelope) up close!

Session Length
This experience is available all year round on Fridays and Sundays only. The zoo is open for general admission from 9.30am – 5pm and the hippo encounter commences at 8.45am and goes for 60 minutes. Please meet at the Service Gate 15 minutes prior to your tour.
Guidelines:
The price quoted is for participants 15 years of age or older. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a paying adult. Children’s prices are also available – please refer to product code SAZ421.
Numbers:
The price quoted is for one person aged 15 years or older. There will be a maximum of six participants in the hippo encounter tour.
Spectators:
Not suitable for spectators.

This experience is not affected by the weather.

Videos are prohibited however you are welcome to bring your stills camera. The price includes general admission to the zoo and a place in our special hippo encounter tour.

The hippo encounter at Adelaide Zoo was brilliant, would definitely recommend it for animal lovers. We chatted with two different keepers, fed the hippos, giraffes and meerkats and were provided with morning tea and a mini tour by the knowledgeable guide who greeted us on arrival.

For an animal lover it was the perfect gift! The experience was absolutely wonderful. To be so close to, and actually be able to touch these animals was such a rare experience. Being in a small group meant that the keepers were able to chat informally to us while going about their chores. A really feel-good start to the day, and the zoo actually included several other treats. I am now considering trying another of the animal experiences!

It was great, the keepers were very knowledgeable and friendly . We also got to do more than was stated on the voucher as when we had finished the hippo encounter we got the chance to feed and touch some other animals. At the end we had coffee and cake which was included in the cost and was a nice touch. All in all, very worthwhile

It was actually much better value than it appeared on face value. After we had done the hippo encouter we had the opportunity to feed and touch some different animals even though this was not stated as being part of the deal. We also got coffee and cake morning tea included which was a nice touch also. Overall a really good experience and the keepers were very knowlegable and friendly

All the keepers and volunteers were welcoming and took the time to talk to us. Fantastic experience
