See animals from around the world without having to leave Adelaide! Treat your child to a day out at the zoo and a special hippo encounter tour, getting up close and personal with our pair of Nile hippos at feed time. During this exclusive encounter you’ll learn all about these majestic animals.

Meerkats, otters and Malayan sun bears – you’ll see a global menagerie of animals during your visit to our zoo. With your zoo admission you can spend the day viewing animals (both from Australia and other continents), relaxing in picnic areas or pick up a bite to eat from our cafe.

The highlight of the day is the special Hippo Encounter behind-the-scenes tour! During this tour you’ll get to meet Susie and Brutus, our huge pair of Nile hippos. Help the keeper give the hippos their daily mouth check and then feed them a hippo snack! With a maximum of six people in the group this is a very special experience!

You’ll also get to meet out zebra family and see our beautiful bongo (a large forest-dwelling antelope) up close!

Session Length

This experience is available all year round on Fridays and Sundays only. The zoo is open for general admission from 9.30am – 5pm and the hippo encounter commences at 8.45am and goes for 60 minutes. Please meet at the Service Gate 15 minutes prior to your tour.

Guidelines:

The price quoted is for children 6 – 14 years of age. This experience is not suitable for anyone under 6 years of age and children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Adult’s prices are also available – please refer to product code SAZ422.

Numbers:

The price quoted is for one child 6 – 14 years of age. There will be a maximum of six participants in the hippo encounter tour.

Spectators:

Not suitable for spectators.

Weather:

This experience is not affected by the weather.

Other Info:

Videos are prohibited however you are welcome to bring your stills camera. The price includes general admission to the zoo and a place in our special hippo encounter tour.

    Herbert, Lee and Sienna had a really amazing time with the hippos and also saw the pandas and fed the giraffes. The volunteer lady who met them was wonderful and they said they zoo person spent a very long time with them and made for a very pleasant day. We met them after all this and went around and looked at all the animals and the zoo is a credit to all the caring and hard working people who look after it and the animals
