If you have a passion for steam trains then this experience gets you up close and personal. All the sights, sounds and atmosphere of an authentic steam train journey will take you back to another era when steam ruled the rails.

Your experience starts as you are welcomed aboard as special guests of the Victorian Goldfields Railway. Sit back and relax as you take a leisurely return journey from either Maldon to Castlemaine or Castlemaine to Maldon on the former Victorian Railways Castlemaine to Maldon Broad-Gauge Branchline linking the two historic goldfields towns.

You will be provided with a glass of local wine and nibbles to enjoy on board our First Class Carriage During the journey , one participant will enjoy an extra unique dimension of the steam train experience by riding with the crew on the locomotive on a section of the line. You will also receive a complimentary copy of our full colour souvenir book.

Please note: This experience does not operate during February.

This experience voucher is valid for 12 months from date of purchase.

Venue:

Maldon (Central Victoria). A 90 minute drive from Melbourne. This is a return journey.

Session Length

A mutually suitable date and time needs to be arranged between participants and the railway to ensure availability. The time table allows passengers to spend time in either Castlemaine or Maldon before returning. The train journey takes 75 minutes.

Guidelines:

Any adult can participate. The Loco Ride has a minimum age of 16 years for participants.

This experience is for two people. Although there will be other passengers on the train.

N/A

Weather:

Weather does not interfere with journey , except on days of extreme fire danger, when a diesel loco substitutes for steam.

    An absolutely fantastic experience. My husband loved being in the engine during part of the trip. The people really looked after us. Would thoroughly recommend it.

    The feedback is definitely POSITIVE ++++his was an experience that I have wanted to do since I was very young and that’s to RedBalloon I did it. It was FANTASTIC…!!!! I feel that simply saying “Thank you” is not enough. I am looking forward in doing it again soon.

    A most enjoyable experience of bygone days. Catering in Ist class carriage and views were excellent. The opportunity for my wife to ride on the engine footplate was unique. Thank you very much. Bill and Pat.

    Excellent Trip, riding the Loco with the Driver and Fireman is brilliant. All the people at the Railway are very friendly and make sure you are enjoying the experience and your time with them.
