Learn sea kayaking off St Kilda! This unique sport combines traditional kayaking with the interest and exploratoration of being at sea. Manoeuvre, go forwards, backwards, turn and learn techniques for rescue and recovery. 6 hours tuition equipment included - get a whole sport, wrapped up!

This experience is perfect for beginners! Learn how to safely enjoy paddling, about the equipment and clothing required, manoeuvring your kayak, how to enjoy a short paddle and safety, including emergency procedures. You will learn in a single kayak (unless you specifically choose a double sea kayak). This course is for people who want to feel more competent and safe in light to moderate sea conditions, and is great for anyone looking to take get more serious about sea kayaking.

  • Learn efficient strokes to go forward and backwards
  • How to stop at speed
  • Turning strokes
  • Strokes to make you go sideways
  • 'Low support'
  • Upwind and down-wind paddling strokes

Learn rescue and recovery techniques, all about kayak design, and ways of reading different waters will be discussed.

Once you finish this course you will need to go away and practice. As far as paddling on a day trip, always go with at least 3 other people who are considered to be “experienced”. Always be mindful of the weather, tide, distances, fitness, energy levels, emergency equipment etc. Skills such as high support, Eskimo roll, paddling in surf conditions are advanced skills required for when the weather gets rough or when something unexpected happens and are covered in further courses offered by Sea Kayak Australia.

This experience operates out of St Kilda, Melbourne.

Session Length

This experience is 6 hours, from 10-4 with a lunch break in the middle. The experience runs across the middle of the day about once a fortnight.

Guidelines:

People need to be 14 years and over and not carrying any major injury e.g. bad back or dislocated shoulder. Max weight is 120kg and max height is 203cm.

Numbers:

You will be in a group of 3-5 people with an instructor.

Weather:

The kayaking venue is protected from some wind directions in all directions, but if it is too windy we relocate to the Docklands – we'll let you know as early as possible if that's the case.

Other Info:

Participants need moderate fitness. There are advanced skills courses you may choose to move onto when you have this mastered.
